If you'd prefer a smoother soup, blitz until nearly smooth. Since split peas are mild in flavor, soup made with them can be a little muted. The ham does a lot to rectify that, but a base of aromatics, fresh herbs, and well-flavored stock are equally essential. Add peas, then water, and bring to boil. Put the water, split peas, & uncleaned ham bone in a large soup pot and bring to a boil.
