The first step in my cherry cobbler with cake mix recipe is pouring the filling into the pan. Like other dump cake style cobblers, all you have to do is take 2 cans of cherry pie filling and literally “dump” them into the 9×13 pan.
I then spread the filling out evenly and sprinkled some lemon juice and almond extract over the cherries. Lemon brings out fruit flavor and tones down sweetness, and almond extract enhances cherry flavor, so I thought they would be good additions to the recipe.
Even though the canned pie filling was already fairly sweet, I decided to sprinkle another 1/4 cup of white sugar on top of the filling. Although these three extra ingredients are not necessary, I suggest adding them if you want to take your cobbler to the next level.
After mixing in the extra ingredients into the filling, I moved on to the crust. This dump cake style cobbler is so easy because all you have to do is open a box of white cake mix and sprinkle it over the filling–no rolling out pie dough at all!
The most time-consuming part of the recipe is the final step: adding the butter. First, I took 2 sticks of very cold butter and cut them into very thin slices. Then, I laid the slices of butter on top of the cake mix, being sure to space them evenly. By placing small pieces of butter across the top of the cobbler, the melted butter soaked into the topping evenly and turned the entire cobbler a beautiful golden brown.
My cherry cobbler with cake mix and pie filling recipe was a success. The cherry pie filling was sweet and flavorful, and the crust was sweet and buttery. In regards to texture, the the fruit filling was soft and juicy, and the topping was crispy and crunchy. As you can imagine, the combination of flavors and textures was great.

In spite of my criticism, I still highly recommend this dessert. This cherry cobbler with cake mix recipe was easy to make, and 99% of people would say it’s amazing. It’s also really versatile since you make bake it in a 9×13 pan in the oven, in a Dutch oven, or make it in a crockpot. This cobbler would be great for feeding a crowd, too.
